More children are being stolen in Accra. Statistics at the regional Domestic Violence Victims’ Support Unit (DOVVSU) reveal such cases including assault, unnatural carnal knowledge and threat of death or harm topped the list of crimes in the first three months of this year. The records confirm rampant media reports of child theft cases. Last year only one case was recorded but nine babies have been reported stolen so far this year. There is however a decline in crimes such as incest, abortion and rape. Public Relations Officer of DOVVSU, Irene Oppong said “most parents are not vigilant so the suspects play tricks on their intelligence and get away with their children.” She said DOVVSU was undertaking an aggressive education campaign to help parents identify potential risks to the children.
