Information and Communication Technology education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has received a major boost, with the completion of a training laboratory.
Chinese telecom solutions provider, Huawei, handed the facility to university authorities on Monday.
Constructed at the cost of 400 thousand United States dollars, it is the second of its kind by the company which had built a similar one the University of Cape Coast.
Managing Director of Huawei Ghana, Diana Ayim says the company provides solutions to over 45 of the world top telecom operators.
She indicates the overall objective is to bridge the digital divide among tertiary institutions, through ICT education development.
Madam Ayim says Huawei will train some lecturers at KNUST who will in turn impart their knowledge to the students.
Vice- Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis acknowledged the crucial and global role of ICT.
He however says financial constraints make it difficult to invest substantially in the equipments for ICT education.
Professor Otoo-Ellis sys collaboration with Huawei will therefore afford KNUST students opportunity to upgrade their IT skills.
He indicated KNUST, on its own, has earmarked a parcel of land for the construction of an ultra modern 1,500 capacity ICT center for optimum teaching and learning.
Meanwhile, President Mills could soon have the convenience of interacting with his ministers and other appointees via live video.
This will be made possible under the e-Governance Network Project which is nearing completion. Government is working with Huawei to concretize the project which began in April last year.
Deputy Minister for Communication, Ernest Attuquaye Armah, says government is committed to the initiative in recognition of the importance of Information and Communication Technology to effective governance.
It comprises 30 WiMax sites in addition to 4,600 local area network ports to enhance connectivity in over 110 government offices across the country.
Speaking at the KNUST, Mr. Attuquaye Armah said the project will also enhance operations of other key state institutions.
Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Gong Jianzhong, said his home government will continue to support Ghana to develop her economy as the two countries work to strengthen their relationship.
