Justices of the higher courts who hear cases in the regions can now deliver their judgments remotely to local courts from Accra.
This follows the commissioning of a new telepresence video conferencing facility Tuesday, by Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, she said the system would create a virtual courtroom setting where evidence, judgments and other testimonies can be taken remotely from witnesses living abroad.
“To improve case management and to expedite justice delivery, especially at the Appeal Division, [the Judicial Service] has set up additional courts of appeal in Kumasi, Cape Coast, Koforidua and Tamale. Currently these work four days in the week, that is, Mondays to Thursdays and deliver judgment Fridays,” she stated.
The Chief Justice said with the video conferencing facility, “the sitting days will increase from four to five days with judgment delivered via this facility to the regions from Accra.”
Mrs. Georgina Wood said the Rules of Court Committee of the Judicial Service would amend its rules to allow for evidence and judgments to be taken and delivered electronically.
Three additional telepresence video conferencing equipment, she said, would be set up “at the Judicial Service stations in Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale within the course of the year to enable the Service to expand its communication reach nationwide.”
