Commercial sex workers operating around Arena in Accra have taken over the premises of the Ayalolo Cluster of Schools. Their activities are due to the absence of security and proper lighting systems at the school premises. Mr Israel Martei, Supervisor of Circuit 14 of the Ghana Education Service in-charge of Ayalolo sub-metro, disclosed this to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio, Jonathan Tackie-Commey, during a visit to some educational facilities in the area. The visit was to enable him to have first hand information about the extent of development and the plight of the people in the area. He said that apart from the operations of the sex workers, the school has not had any major renovation for the past four de­cades. Mr Martei stated that there were about six different schools on the same premises, parts of which had developed cracks with broken roofing and ceiling. The situation, he said, was not pro­moting academic work in some of the classes since they had to perch in other classrooms during raining seasons. Mr Martei said the classrooms were sometimes littered with human excreta and students spend hours to tidy up for classes to begin. This delays academic work as the classes hours are devoted to cleaning class­rooms for conducive studies. He appealed to the MP to assist the school with sanitation facilities to ease the pressure on the existing ones which were already dilapidated. On his part, Mr Tackie-Commey, bemoaned the current state of the school, and said urgent action would be taken to arrest the situation. He decried the use of the facility for commercial sex activities and assured the school authorities of his willingness to help put in place the necessary security measures to rid the school of the sex operators and other intruders to restore sanity. Earlier, Mr Tackie-Commey visited the Independence Avenue One and Two Junior High Schools, where he witnessed the bad state of some classroom blocks as well as sanitation facilities. He noted the problems and assured them of his assistance to ad­dress them. Mr Tackie-Commey inspected works on the Asofoatse Nettey Road and the Korle Lagoon Bridge where construction works were on-going. The two projects, to be completed in October this year, are ex­pected to ease traffic congestion in the area. The Accra West Area Engineer, Mr Kwasi Darko, said the World Bank-sponsored projects were part of the rehabilitation of the Central Business District (CBD) programme which was aimed at improving the road network in the area. The MP expressed satisfaction at the progress of work, and urged the workers to complete the project as scheduled. Meanwhile work on the Korle bridge was nearing completion as the engineers assured that what was left to be done was the casting of beams and other minor concrete works. The Project Manager, Mr Bu Zhuging of the China Railway Corpo­ration, attributed the delay on the project to unfavourable geological conditions at the site which necessitated a change in the project design. He said for over a year funding had not been forthcoming to enable them to expedite action on the project. In spite of the challenges, he assured the MP of their eagerness to complete the work on schedule.
