There is total confusion as government scrambles to find a handle on a national disgrace brought about by the suspension of the Ghana-Lesotho World Cup qualifier after flood lights at the Baba Yara Sports stadium went off for well over an hour. There is confusion as to whether the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana has been suspended as a result of the incident. What remained certain, however, was that the game was suspended for well over an hour. Communications Director at the Presidency Koku Anyidoho in a swift action told Joy News Alhaji Abdulai Kurah had been suspended with immediate effect but that was quickly countered by a statement from the Energy Ministry. Flood lights went off at the Baba Yara Sports stadium resulting in a temporary hold-up in the World Cup qualifier game between the Black Stars and Lesotho Mr Koku Anyidoho, said the dismissals will affect all those in line of duty at ECG and all those who have something do with the matter. He said "President Mills is upset and everybody who has a role to play in the matter will have their heads roll." "This is unacceptable and the president is upset," he told Joy News. Asked whether the decision to suspend the ECG Director had been communicated to him, Mr Anyidoho said, "The people of Ghana matter more so it does not matter whether they are informed or not." He emphasised that those who are on the line of fire must be fired but there is doubt as to whether the statement carries any weight especially where the ECG itself is pleading innocence. The blame for the incident should be placed squarely at the doorstep of the National Sports Council, PRO of the ECG, Erasmus Baidoo, said. He said there was power supplied by the ECG and that it was a switch on the generator of the Sports Council that developed a fault resulting in the flood light going off. "There is no reason why there is no power in the stadium except that the generators of the Sports Council developed a problem," he said. According to Mr Baidoo, the stadium was running on the generators of the Sports Council and that ECG was only a backup. If flood lights went off, therefore, he noted, the ECG cannot be held accountable. His argument was confirmed by reporters at the stadium.
