A 45-year-old driver who allegedly attempted to murder a salesman and took away his day’s sales has been arrested by the police at Asamankese in the Eastern Region.
The suspect, Daniel Avornyo, has since been remanded in prison custody by the Asamankese Circuit Court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Siame.
Avornyo, whose plea was not taken, will reappear before the court on June 9, 2010.
According to the Asamankese Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yahaya Muchiraru, Avornyo is a driver of BOP Investment Limited, dealers in Nestle products at Asamankese.
He said between 11p.m. and 12 midnight on May 25, this year, Avornyo was driving a vehicle with registration number GS 3291-09 to distribute Nestle products.
In the course of the distribution of the products, avornyo rushed to a police snap checkpoint on the outskirts of Asamankese along the Asamankese-Nsawam road and reported to the policemen on duty that two armed robbers wielding AK 47 assault rifles and wearing police uniforms had kidnapped his salesman and taken away his day's sales.
DSP Yahaya said the policemen accompanied him to the supposed crime scene but no clues were found.
He stated that the policemen then led Avornyo to the Asamankese Police Station to lodge a formal complaint after which he was placed in cells to assist in investigations into the matter.
According to him, the suspect who sensed danger immediately took to his heels but the policemen pursued and apprehended him.
DSP Yahaya said when police personnel went to the crime scene again and conducted a thorough search in the area, they realised that Avornyo had inflicted several wounds on the salesman and dumped him in the bush thinking that he was dead.
He said when the policemen searched Avonyo's vehicle, they found GH¢6,OOO cash hidden under the driver's seat.
DSP Yahaya said the salesman, who was in a coma, was rushed to the Asamankese Government Hospital where he had since been on admission in critical condition.
