The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on the Electoral Commission to remove names of minors and foreigners from the voters’ register despite the commission’s rejection of proposals for a replacement of the document.
A five-member committee tasked to consider demands for a new register dismissed proposals by some opposition parties including the CPP that the document should be replaced.
General Secretary of the party Nii Armah Akomfra says although changing the register would have been in the best interest of Ghanaians his party will play along.
“We will certainly ensure that every constituency that we think that there are concerns, one-by-one, should be tackled,” he said.
He adds the recommendation by the five-member committee that looked into the demands for a new register did not say every concern should be set aside.
“[The recommendation] is still saying that minors should be removed from the register, aliens should be removed from the register and of course deceased people should be removed from the register,” he said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the CPP have been at the fore of a push for new register. They say the current electoral roll is bloated with names of minors and aliens.
