Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Prof. Victor Agyeman, has requested that the government find ways to ensure research results are acknowledged.
He observes the Council’s efforts are less appreciated.
“Whenever the varieties are released, it is given to MoFA and given straight to the farmers and so they don’t trace it to CSIR. Most people do not know the value of CSIR,” said Prof. Agyeman.
He made comments during a visit to the Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI) by the Minister for Environment Science and Technology and Innovation, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie.
“We believe you can help us address this so that we have value for the research that we do,” he appealed to the Minister.
Prof. Agyeman believes the CSIR should be paid by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for uptake of their output.
CRI is the best crops research institute in West Africa and second ranked research institute in Ghana.
The Institute and sister research station, Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) attracts over 3 million cedis of funding grants.
While acknowledging the feat, Prof. Agyeman advised the Institute to position itself to attract more funds.
“When people get to know you’re positioned to attract funds, you can then leverage your strength to get more funds,” he advised.
