An Accra Court has fined Abubakari Sadick, popularly known as Cyborg, GH¢24,000 for the unlawful discharge of a firearm during a public gathering in Accra.

This is equivalent to 2,000 penalty units, with up to two years’ imprisonment in default, after he pleaded guilty to charges of possession and unlawful use of a firearm.

Cyborg was arraigned after a viral video showed him discharging a firearm into the air during a public gathering, an act that raised serious public safety concerns and drew swift action from law enforcement agencies.

Upon his plea of guilty, the court convicted him on the charges and imposed the fine, stressing that celebratory gunfire and the misuse of weapons pose grave risks to public safety and will not be treated lightly by the justice system.

The offences fall under Ghana’s Firearms Act, 1962 (Act 118), which criminalises the unlawful possession and indiscriminate discharge of firearms, even where the weapon is legally owned. The law provides for fines, custodial sentences, or both, depending on the circumstances of the offence.

The Ghana Police Service has repeatedly warned that firearm licences do not permit public discharge and that offenders risk arrest, prosecution, fines, or imprisonment.

On Tuesday, President John Mahama indicated that due process will be followed after Asake, during a subsequent encounter with the President, attempted to plead on his behalf, urging him to temper justice with mercy, explaining that the firearm was discharged in the excitement of the moment.

Asake and members of his entourage greeted President Mahama during the event.

Recalling the incident during the exchange, President Mahama asked, “he’s the one the guy fired the gun for?” to which those present responded in the affirmative.

“And he ended up in trouble,” the President added, drawing laughter from the room.

The Nigerian star then apologised on Cyborg’s behalf. President Mahama acknowledged the plea but maintained that due process must prevail.

"Don’t worry about it. The law is the law.”

The music star arrived in the country days ago and performed at the AfroFuture Festival.
