The General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says he is now among the richest people in the country after winning a defamation suit he brought against the Daily Guide newspaper.
A Fast-Track High Court in Accra Thursday ordered the newspaper to pay 250 thousand Ghana cedis and a cost of 15,000 Ghana cedis to the NDC scribe.
This was after the newspaper reported barely three years ago that Asiedu Nketia used his position as a member of the Board of Directors of the Bui Power Authority to divert building materials for his personal building project in the Ashanti region – an allegation the NDC General Secretary vehemently denied and later sued the paper.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme after the ruling, an elated Asiedu Nketia said his soul is at peace.
According to him, the ruling by the court is a vindication of his innocence after he was branded corrupt and self-centered.
The NDC scribe popularly called General Mosquito recounted how he drew Daily Guide's attention to the fact that he did not own the house in Kumasi but the paper refused to retract the story.
Asiedu Nketia who was not particularly happy about the damages awarded by the court said he wanted GH¢1 million.
He said he intends to build a house with the money at the exact location in Kumasi and name it "Kwasia bi nti" to wit because of a fool.
Asiedu Nketia said the case should serve as a lesson to all media houses to do their work professionally devoid of partisan political interest.
