Residents of four communities on the outskirts of the capital city, Accra are said to be living in fear following frequent attacks on them by dozens of gun-wielding land guards.
Huge acres of farmlands in the Damfa, Otiinibi, Adoteiman and Kpeiman all farmland communities between Oyarifa, in the Greater Accra region and Aburi in the Eastern region, are said to have been taken over by the land guards who have driven the residents away.
Joy News’Beatrice Adu who was in the communities reports that residents, who are predominantly farmers say their lands have been taken away from them by these land guards.
The farmers say the land guards have informed them that very soon they will take over all the lands in the area.
The land guards are reported to have walled part of the lands they have occupied to prevent anybody from trespassing.
Nii Afotu Brempong, Chief of Damfa, confirmed the attacks saying the land guards sometimes fire gunshots around the lands they (people of Damfa) are occupying to ward off the farmers and other residents.
The Chief said the police have been to the lands to warn the land guards, but the land guards have been left without further reprimand since then.
But Adams Choroo, Assemblyman of the area said police have begun further investigations after he lodged a formal complain to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
In a related development police in Accra have granted an enquiry bail to 40 land guards they arrested last Friday in land dispute case. The heavily armed men were reported to have attacked some artisans and wounded the workers there.
Police reinforcement was sent there on Friday May 31, to restore peace after a distress call was made to them.
Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tettey, told Joy News the forty were granted bail on Sunday since his outfit was not ready to take them to court. They are expected to report to the police twice a week.
