President John Mahama has arrived in Nigeria to participate in the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for December 14, 2025, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The summit, which will feature a Special Debate on the Future of the Community, will bring together ECOWAS leaders to deliberate on key regional priorities.
President Mahama is expected to take part in a closed-door session focusing on the strategic direction of the Community, political stability, regional security, and economic integration.
Key agenda items include pronouncements on the future of the ECOWAS Community, the presentation of the 2025 Annual Report on the State of the Community, reports on regional security and ongoing mediation efforts, updates on the political transition in Guinea, and a review of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS).
The summit will conclude with the adoption of a final communiqué, followed by a joint press conference.
Within the week, the ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sole candidate from ECOWAS for chairperson of the African Union when the rotating chairmanship gets to West Africa’s turn in 2027.
The Authority of Heads of State and government of ECOWAS is expected to adopt this declaration on Sunday, December 14.
