The Presiding Bishop of Perez Chapel, Bishop Agyinasare has asked government to demolish all buildings on water ways.

He has also asked government to prosecute people who sell lands on water ways as one of the first steps towards dealing with Accra’s perennial flooding.

His comments follow last Wednesday torrential rains and fire disasters that claimed about 150 lives.

The Perez Chapel is one of many properties in Accra which got flooded. Bishop Agyinasare says the disaster gives government the opportunity to correct all the wrongs.

“This is the time that the authorities should also break down buildings on water ways. Everybody has seen how this disaster of this rain has wrecked havoc. This is an opportunity for the authorities to do what they must do.

“This is the time that the approval agencies must stop registering lands in water ways because nobody can build on water ways except it has been approved and has been given permission”, he added.

He cautioned property owners whose properties are in water ways to desist from selling the properties.

Bishop Agyinasare says the disaster should serve as reminder to Ghanaians to change their attitude towards the environment.

He said if Ghanaians had stuck to the national sanitation day programme and cleaned their environs every Saturday, the disaster would not have occurred.

However, he believes that a lot more can be done to prevent this from happening in the future.
