A man has been arrested at a polling station in the Ashanti region after ballot papers were found in his pocket during the District Assembly elections there.
People who had come to vote at the Sakafia polling station in the Asawase constituency in the region noticed the suspicious movements of a middle-aged man, Mallam Aminu.
Some supporters of the aspirants confronted him and created a scene. A military patrol team chanced upon the emotionally-charged situation.
The soldiers arrested and handed him over to the Asawase police. But this was not without resistance from supporters of the incumbent Assemblyman Anyass Abdallah. It is believed that Mallam Aminu was working in the interest of the incumbent.
The security forces managed to bring the situation under control and Mallam was whisked away at about 4:30pm Tuesday.
Meanwhile counting of ballots is underway in more than 30,000 centers as the polls closed after 5pm
