Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has decried the apathetic attitude of chiefs in particular, and members of the public in general, to his developmental efforts. He is not happy with the level of support from 'nananom,' and indicated that the Otumfuo Education Fund had been sustained over the years, mainly because of the contributions from foreigners and corporate bodies, rather than indigenes. According to the Asante King, he has had to spend over GH¢300,000,000, from his own resources, to sponsor the education of some of the beneficiaries of the Fund, this year alone. The Asantehene raised this concern at an Asanteman Council meeting, held on Monday, to welcome him back home from a three-nation tour that took him to Libya, Nigeria and South Africa. Otumfuo's visit to Nigeria was at the invitation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and the Be Ife Overlord, while the Libyan leader, Muamar Qaddafi, was behind his trip to Libya. According to the Asantehene, the Otumfuo Charity Foundation is to be launched in Nigeria at a later date, for which the former Nigerian President has given assurances of his readiness to support the Foundation, in order to sustain it. He revealed that bilateral issues bordering on employment opportunities, oil supply, and the construction of a hostel complex for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and other matters were discussed. He said Libyan investors had planned to embark on commercial farming and real estate development in Ghana, and urged chiefs to explore the opportunity, by drafting proposals. On the local scene, Otumfuo announced the renewal of a 1000 ounce gold agreement between Asanteman and AngloGold, and that a delegation was expected from the company in June this year, to formally document the agreement.
