Civil Society Organisations and other social partners against the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), between Europe and African Caribbean Pacific countries say the text of the agreement as it stands now does not favour ACP member countries.
They contend that the agreement is between unequal partners, with ACP countries at a disadvantaged position. At a media briefing in Accra on the outcome of deliberations at the just ended World Social Forum Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, one of the participating groups, the Third World Network (TWN) said a three-point approach has been adopted to intensify campaign against the agreement.
A Programme Officer of TWN, Gyekye Tanoh, urged that ACP countries to carefully consider the ramifications of treaties and agreements they enter into to ensure that their resources are not plundered.
He emphasised that the treaties and agreements entered should be enforceable with sanctions attached.
Mr. Tanoh stated that the struggle by the World Social Forum, should engage the active participation of all social groups in the fight against the EPA.
The Environment Programme Officer of TWN Africa, Abdulai Daramani urged the media to be involved in the struggle against unfair trade, economic and investment practices.
