Nollywood star actress, Eucharia Anunobi Ekwu, has backed down on her demand for N100 million(About 1,000,000 Ghana Cedis) compensation as she prayed the court for dissolution of her marriage to Charles Ekwu at a Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Thursday.
According to the petitioner’s new pleading, all she wants is a dissolution, sole custody of her son and whatever compensation the court gives in regard to the upkeep of their child and her maintenance.
This was contrary to her prayers when she urged the court to grant her the sole custody of the only child of their marriage and N100 million compensation for all expenses borne by her after her husband abandoned their matrimonial home.
However, at the resumed trial of the matter, counsel to Eucharia asked for the leave of the court to amend their earlier petition on the divorce. The judge though, granted the prayers of the petitioner, ordered that all loose ends be tidied before the next trial date.
Eucharia had earlier prayed the court to dissolve the six-year-old marriage between her and her estranged businessman husband, Charles Ekwu because the marriage has broken down completely and there was no love between them because they have been living apart since 2006.
She had also on June 3, 2009 during her evidence informed the court that they got married on December 20, 2000 at the Ikoyi Registry but the marriage which produced a boy, broke down in 2006.
According to her, “The marriage has broken down because in 2006 when we had a misunderstanding on his infidelity because I caught him with our 13 year old housemaid and when I raised eyebrows, he moved out of our matrimonial home and till now we have not heard nor seen him”.
“It has not been easy because I have always been responsible financially to the marriage. We have been living in the house I secured as a spinster, even after marriage and I have been financially engaged in the family because of the love I have for him,” she said.
Nwana assured the court that the amendment was in order to make everything smooth. Subsequently, the case was adjourned till September 23, 2009 for cross-examination and further hearing.
