Police in Accra have arrested a 35 year old man who posed as a BNI operative and defrauded five people of thousands of Cedis.
Sadat Karim, who was arrested on Thursday, is alleged to have taken three thousand five hundred cedis from each of his victims after giving out national immigration recruitment forms.
Sadat is also alleged to have posed as a lecturer at the University of Ghana.
Railway District Police Commander in Accra, DSP Iddrisu Tanko Issifu tells Joy News, an accomplice, a 62 year old Adams Mahama is also behind bars.
He said a female detective who got wind of Sadat’s nefarious activity called him to feign interest of becoming an Immigration officer, which the suspect confirmed to her that he is into that business.
The two agreed to meet for Sadat to issue her the forms which would enable her report for training as a new recruit at the cost of GHc3,500.
Initially, the police said, the suspect asked the undercover detective to meet him at the Ghana Immigration headquarters in Accra but later called her to meet him near the Regional Police headquarters.
According to DSP Iddrisu Tanko Issifu, Sadat put the forms into a head porter’s pan and asked the porter to wait at a distance for him to complete negotiation with the prospective victim.
“When he met the investigator he was arrested, when he was asked about the forms, he said he doesn’t have any forms; he denied flatly until the kayayo (head porter) came in with the form to say that it was this gentleman who gave him the forms.”
The police paraded the suspects today who insisted in an interview with Joy News that they were innocent.
“No, no it is not true,” Sadat Karim denied, but admitted “I did the forms myself but taking 3,500 from somebody I did not take any money”.
His accomplice, Adams Mahama said, “Whatever is happening is never true, they are still investigating it.” He also admitted sending a parcel to the complainant in the case, “that is what I know, so if they are talking about whether conniving or whatever we are doing is totally wrong.”
