Five persons said to be among a group calling itself the concerned youth of Kibi have been injured following a shooting incident at the Okyenhene’s Palace, Monday.
This was confirmed by the State Secretary of Akyem, Antwi Bosiako in an interview with Joy News.
According to him, there were close to 40 gunshots from people suspected to be military men who were in cahoots with some galamsey operators in the area.
The motive for the shooting is yet to be ascertained. Antwi Bosiako-Sekyere however believes strongly it has something to do with illegal mining or galamsey activities in the country.
The shooting incident occurred moments after the Okyenhene, Amoatia Ofori Panin II, had sat in a meeting of the Eastern Regional Peace Advisory Council during which deliberations were held on the increasing devastation of galamsey activities in the country.
Mr. Antwi Bosiako who was present at the meeting said the concerned youth, carrying pans and other equipment belonging to some galamsey operators marched straight to the Okyenhene’s palace a few minutes after the meeting to protest the activities of illegal miners and their military supervisors in the area.
Soon after the complaint the suspected military men emerged and opened fire on the concerned youth.
The five injured persons, according to the deputy minister, are receiving treatment at the Kibi government hospital. He said the military men numbering about six are easily recognizable and would be tracked.
“The crime officer has their names, identities and numbers, so we can easily find them,” he said.
