The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) have arrived at an agreement over the concerns of doctors, over which a nationwide strike was called.
The content of the agreement was, however, not disclosed to the media, as both parties said the National Labour Commission (NLC) had placed an embargo on them not to speak about the issue in any medium.
While officials at the FWSC were tight-lipped, the President of the GMA, Dr Emmanuel Adorn Winful, referred the Daily Graphic to the NLC when pressed for his comments on the atmosphere in which the agreement had been reached by the two parties.
When Dr Winful was further pressed as to whether his response meant there was hope for an end to the GMA's industrial action which started on Saturday, October 7, 2011, he responded, "Sorry, I cannot tell you anything more."
The agreement reached was to be submitted to the NLC by the close of day Thursday.
Doctors embarked on a nationwide strike last Saturday to press home their demand for placement onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) and draw attention to concerns over their grading levels on the structure that would be used for the new unified salary scheme.
Earlier, the Chief Executive of the FWSC, Mr George Smith Graham, had revealed that Thursday's meeting was to iron out some of the thorny concerns that had resulted in the strike by the doctors.
Enquiries at the NLC showed that the commission had taken the decision for the parties not to speak to the media in order to guard the sensitive nature of the negotiations currently ongoing.
The Daily Graphic was assured that a statement would be issued on the matter when the nature of the agreement reached came to the attention of the NLC.
