President John Evans Atta Mills Monday arrived back home after attending the Group of Eight Industrialised Countries Summit (G-8) in Washington, USA. He was met on arrival by the Vice President, John Dramani Mahama, Minister of Defence, Lt.-Gen. Joseph Henry Smith, Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Augustine Peter Blay, and the Inspector-General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye, and other government officials. President Mills, at a media briefing, described deliberations at the summit as fruitful and expressed optimism that its desired results were achieved in the shortest possible time. According to him, good governance could not be achieved without food security; hence, the need to help the African continent to meet that target. He said the private meetings with the G8 by the four African heads affirmed their commitment of making food security their number one priority. President Mills stated that a lot of companies had expressed the interest to invest in agriculture under the SADA programme. The country, he said, had been able to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in agriculture in 2011, and what is needed now is for increased investment in the sector especially in the northern sector which is the food hub of the country. “SADA has taken off, what we need now is an increased investment opportunity in agriculture to meet our set goals,” he added. President Mills assured of governments commitment to support companies that had expressed interest to invest in the agricultural sector.
