League champions Ashantigold face 2010 winners Berekum Chelsea in the opening game of the maiden GHALCA First Trust G6 tournament in Sekondi.
Both teams enter this competition full of confidence after making significant improvements to their squads during the off season.
This game will have a spicy edge to it after the protracted transfer of Chelsea striker Kofi Owusu who had openly declared his interest to play for the Miners. It was rumored he had sealed the deal only for Chelsea to refute the claims a few days later.
Despite their ability to land Owusu, Ashantigold have bolstered their ranks with the services of left back Hudu Yakubu, attacker Dauda Mohammed, the Nuhu brothers; Alhassan Nuhu and Fuseini Nuhu both from New Edubiase and Isaac Amoah.
Head coach Bashir Hayford will use the tournament to sharpen the rough edges of his side ahead of what looks a difficult continental journey.
With the league yet to be started, the tournament will offer this new look Ashantigold without Fatau Dauda, Lawrence Lartey, Didier Kore and Yakubu
Mohammed the much needed match practice to keep them in prime condition for the tie against Algeria’s MO Bejaia.

Their opponents Berekum Chelsea have also been active on the transfer front acquiring two prominent signings in former captain Abdul Basit and former U-17 star Saddick Adams.
Solomon Odwo’s men despite signing these players have lost influential defender Richard Osei Agyemang and pacey winger Bennett Ofori to Asante Kotoko.
Both teams will strive to win this game as they both have to face Asante Kotoko in their next fixture to stand any chance of topping the group to see either of them progressing to Sunday’s final.
Ashantigold and Chelsea served a goal feast in their last league fixture drawing 2-2 in Berekum and should they follow this script, fans could be in for an entertaining start to the G6 tournament.
