The West African Football Union (Wafu) has unanimously elected Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi as the interim president of the regional body.
The decision came after Wafu suspended its executive committee in Banjul on Saturday and appointed an interim executive committee to take charge.
The meeting was called for new executives to be elected after Wafu president Amos Adamu was suspended from all football related activities.
The disgraced Nigerian official was banned for three years by Fifa late last year for seeking bribes during the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests.
But the scheduled election to replace Adamu was postponed after Caf intervened as the continental body will meet in May to review the regional bodies in Africa.
“The general assembly accepted a recommendation from Caf to postpone elections to the Executive Committee of Wafu until the former carries out a proposed review of the organisation of all zonal unions in Africa,” a Wafu communiqué read.
Wafu will meet in Zurich on 31 May to decide on the date to hold elections.
The seven-member interim executive committee led by Nyantakyi will steer the affairs of Wafu until their next meeting in Zurich.
Other members of the interim committee are Senegal’s Augustin Senghore, Jose Lobato of Guinea Bissau and Gambian Seedy Kinteh.
Ivorian Idris Diallo, Burkinabe Theodore Sawadogo and Mali’s Hamadou Cisse are also members of the interim executive committee.
Meanwhile, Wafu members are considering moving the regional body’s headquarters from Ivory Coast because of the political turmoil in the country.
Mohammed Bin Hammam, the Qatari who will contest Fifa presidential elections next month, travelled to the meeting in Banjul to campaign for African votes.
