Attorney General Benjamin Kumbour says Ghana has incurred additional financial loss in the payment of controversial judgement debt to construction Pioneers. The AG told Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) the nation has defaulted in paying part of the outstanding €80 million debt because the case is under investigations by the quasi judicial body. He warned of further cost if the committee does not conclude its prolonged hearing by June 21st. The AG disclosed this after the committee refused to hear his submissions because the state broadcaster refused to provide live coverage for the final sitting over the matter. “That Ghana might indeed be suffering from financial loss subsequently in relation to CP, this time not by an act by an omission and I just want to draw the attention of the Committee for guidance as to how we should proceed,” he said. He added the Committee failed to reply to letter in which he was asking for direction on whether or not to go ahead with the payment. But the Chairman of the Committee Albert Kan Dapaah said it is not within the authority of Parliament to decide whether the AG can go ahead to pay the amount to CP. He said that decision only rests with the executive and Parliament cannot be held responsible for any delays. The committee at some point boycotted hearing because GTV refused to carry it live. Members of the committee say they suspect a deliberate plot not to cover the hearing which could expose the truth in the payment of the controversial judgment debt to CP. Chairman of PAC Kan Dapaah said in the public interest they had to adjourn hearing until issues are sorted with GBC.
