The Ghana Reinsurance Company Limited on Tuesday presented a cheque for 50 million cedis to the University of Ghana Students Financial Aid Fund, established three years ago to assist bright but needy students. The scheme offers a scholarship package covering the entire education needs of students in the course of studies. Mr Kwesi Essel-Koomson, Member of the Ghana Reinsurance Board, who presented the cheque, said the company had over the years assisted the University of Ghana Medical School, the Cardiothoracic Centre and the Children's Block at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital. He said the company would continue to support the student's fund to make education affordable to the underprivileged. Mr Essel-Koomson said besides yearly contributions to the fund, the company was shifting focus to other projects at the university. "We are also looking at areas of need where the company can assist," he said, and asked the University authorities to make such requests known to them. Professor Clifford Tagoe, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said education in developing countries had become a huge burden on governments and lauded the company's contribution to the sector. He said about 650 students were benefiting under the Fund, which had spent over 1.8 billion cedis since its inception.
