The Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Ghana @50 Committee, Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby has expressed concern about the quality of the Ghanaian media.
Speaking on Citi FMs “Talkback Show” on Thursday, he explained the Ghanaian media, especially the print media, lags “way below standard” as compared with that of Nigeria in terms of quality and the “brave with which issues are tackled.”
According to Dr Brobby, this situation is true of the local media because journalists in this country media personnel do not engage in thorough research on issues they discuss, thus, they end up asking questions which do not really elicit meaningful responses.
“For example, for a programme like this, you will have two competent researchers constantly doing a lot of research. You as a presenter should do your own as well and bring out a lot of issues which will enhance discussion,” he noted.
Unfortunately though, he continues, “what we find is that in the absence of quality research people ask: What do you think? What do you think does not get you very far. It makes it a little bit difficult to get insightful responses,” he added.
Dr Wereko-Brobby also criticized the programme content of almost all the electronic media in the country, emphasizing that “there is very little education, there are no documentaries in both radio and TV” programmes.
He noted further that “that aspect of using the broadcast media to educate is lost. Unfortunately, one finds that if you want to be educated, you need to sometimes resort to foreign media.”
