The narrative about ‘owning the curves’ in fashion seems to be flying high as plus-sized models with super-curves walked the 2017 Glitz Africa Fashion Week (GAFW2017) catwalk for the first time.
The models stormed the runway on the second day of the show, which started on October 6 amid rapturous shouts and applause.
They were rocking clothes designed to celebrate ‘all things curvy’ and plus sizes.
Nigerian lifestyle journalist Latasha Ngwube, who is behind the body positivity movement About that curvy life Collective, told Myjoyonline.com she was inspired by her own body size and shape to champion the cause.
She emphasised the need for curvy women to embrace their bodies and the beauty therein.
In her effort to redefine African fashion by creating a voice for curvy people, she put together brands such as Nori’s Clothing, Assian and Abaya Lagos that understand the need for fashion for all sizes and helping to spread the body positivity messages through their brands.
Latasha is hoping that by curating this collective of designers and giving them a platform, she can promote size inclusiveness in African fashion.
But the GAFW2017 wasn’t only about plus size models. The catwalk was as usual taken by well-known designers who delivered assured.
Duaba Serwaa was on point with her Nsubura and Kente-themed collection as Quophi Akotua and Mai Atafo’s wedding shows seemed to outdo each other as the standout of the fashion week.
Also outstanding were designs by young, underground and emerging designers who battled it out in graduate shows and other competitions.
The audience took the street style shows personal, enjoying themselves all through the event.
