The Ghana Maritime Authority says the accident on the Volta Lake which led to the death of 10 people could have been avoided if the authority was better equipped.
The tragedy occurred when a boat carrying thirteen people from a village in the Pru District capsized enroute to Yeji.
The boat is said to have been overloaded.
Speaking to Joy news, Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Peter Azumah said the agency needs to be resourced to enforce regulations on the lake.
Mr Azumah said “we need patrol boats because the owners of pontoons are taking advantage of the absence of patrol boats to overload their vessels."
Meanwhile, Managing Director of the Volta Lake Company Martin Hilse has expressed concern that ferries promised by the Ministry of Transport and the World Bank for the company would not be delivered as scheduled.
“I’m very concerned that they can be late; we’ve still not started the negotiation on how they would be installed and where they will be installed,” he said.
Transport Minister Joe Gidisu told the media the pontoons would be put on the lake to ensure transportation on the lake is eased.
