The Ghana Medical Association is calling for stringent screening and surveillance system that will detect any Ebola carrier even with the UN Ebola Response team coming to station in Ghana.

The team arrived in Ghana Monday afternoon to help prevent any possible outbreak of the deadly disease in the country.

The team would also ensure spread of the disease is contained in the already affected countries – Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria.

Deputy General Secretary of the GMA Justice Yankson told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh that because most of the members of the UN Ebola Response team would be having direct contact with persons from the affected countries, Ghana should take serious precautions.

“Any person, who works within this UN set up and is going to have contact with the countries where the problems are at the moment; our screening and surveillance system should be so tight that at any given point we can pick up anybody for whatever reason that may be coming into the country with the virus. We should be able to do that else we’ll find ourselves in problem.”

He said the 10,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) imported by the government should be distributed to all the country’s approved entry points, which have health personnel manning them.

He added that all regional and district health directorates should also be allocated some quantities of the PPE.
