The leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has dismissed calls for its resignation from office.
The leaders maintained they were instrumental in negotiating better allowances for teachers under the controversial Single Spine Salary Structure for which reason calls for their resignation were unwarranted.
Both the leadership of GNAT and NAGRAT are under siege from some teachers accusing them of not negotiating better conditions for teachers.
On Wednesday, a rebel group calling itself the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Association hit the streets in Kumasi demanding the immediate resignation of the leaders of the two teacher’s associations.
Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah who was with the demonstrating teachers reports the demonstration was largely peaceful.
The teachers in their hundreds petitioned the Director of the Regional Education unit and called for the resignation of the executives of the two associations.
One of the leaders of the demonstration, Samuel Afranie Frimpong told Ohemeng Tawiah the GNAT and NAGRAT executives have failed woefully in negotiating the SSSS.
He said after the executives of both associations flouted a 72 hour ultimatum to resign, they the concerned teachers have decided to use all lawful means to ensure that they depart from office.
He said they have totally lost confidence in the two executives and must resign.
But in a reaction GNAT insists the concerns by the rebel teachers are misplaced.
At a press conference on Wednesday the GNAT leaders say it is wrong to be accused of not doing anything.
Joy News’ Kweku Botwe who was present at the press conference enumerated some of the efforts the leaders claimed to have made to improve the SSSS.
According to him it was the negotiating skills of the leadership of GNAT, NAGRAT which led to the introduction of the 15 per cent teacher retention premium.
He further stated that their inputs led to the new grades under which the teachers were put.
