The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that the Goldbod initiative will take an aggressive stance against gold smuggling in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM on Monday, 3rd March, he emphasised that the initiative, introduced under former President John Mahama’s vision, is designed to curb illegal gold trade and ensure that Ghana benefits fully from its mineral wealth.
Mr Gyamfi highlighted the devastating impact of gold smuggling on the economy, stressing that the illicit trade results in massive revenue losses for the country.
“Gold smuggling has robbed Ghana of billions in revenue, and we cannot allow this to continue. Goldbod will wage an aggressive war against this illegal activity, ensuring that every ounce of gold extracted benefits the nation,” he asserted.
He further explained that Goldbod will introduce strict monitoring mechanisms and regulatory frameworks to track gold transactions effectively.
According to Mr Gyamfi, the initiative will collaborate with security agencies, mining firms, and international partners to strengthen enforcement efforts.
“We are not taking this lightly. There will be tighter controls at our borders, enhanced tracking systems, and increased penalties for offenders,” he stated.
He assured Ghanaians that Goldbod would prioritise transparency and accountability in the gold sector to prevent illicit dealings.
With the Goldbod initiative set to reshape Ghana’s gold industry, expectations are high for its impact on the economy.
Mr Gyamfi remains optimistic that, with the necessary support and commitment from stakeholders, the initiative will succeed in eradicating gold smuggling and maximising Ghana’s gold revenues.
“This is about protecting our national wealth, and we are fully committed to making Goldbod a game-changer in the fight against illegal gold trade,” he concluded.
