We have no plans of removing subsidies on petroleum products for now. That’s the assurance from Deputy Finance Minister Fiifi Kwetey.
It costs government about 60 million Ghana cedis a month to subsidize petroleum products. The IMF is currently asking government to scrap the policy because it’s not benefiting the targeted poor.
But Fiifi Kwetey tells JOYBUSINESS government is rather looking at how the policy could be maintained whiles ensuring it doesn’t become a drain on its finances.
The IMF however argues that the country could be saving over 150 million cedis every month if it removes subsidies on petroleum products
