Government is demanding that Gabby Asare Otchere Darko produces evidence to substantiate his claims that some persons who arranged the $3 billion Chinese loan agreement would have $30 million as personal gain.
Otherwise, he should retract and render an apology to government for imputing corruption to it, according to a statement issued by the Information Ministry Friday.
The Executive Director of Danquah Institute made the allegation on Joy FM on Thursday after the Majority withdrew the loan agreement from Parliament and presented an amended version.
Mr Otchere Darko, who has opposed the contraction of the facility, said the amended agreement was not fundamentally different from what was withdrawn and that the only difference perhaps was that the people who arranged for the loan are guaranteed $30 million once the loan is approved.
Government has not taken the allegation lightly.
A Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who signed the release, said: “Such statements cannot be allowed to pass as yet another recklessly vicious attack from the New Patriotic Party.”
Therefore, “Mr Gabby Okyere Darko should be willing to name those people and give all Ghanaians the evidence of his claims,” he demanded.
According to the Minister, the “facility [being] the single biggest loan the Republic of Ghana has ever entered, it is natural to expect enormous interest from the international community and for such unsubstantiated statements to be unchallenged will be very inimical to the image and fortunes of Ghana.”
“Such unsubstantiated effusions have the tendency to scare investors and prevent reputable financial institutions like the China Development Bank (CDB) from doing business with Ghana in the future…”
