In furtherance of its ambition to create a positive role for alcohol in society, Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL), observed this year’s International Youth Day with a call on the youth aged between 18 and 35 years to make positive choices about alcohol.
Speaking at the Ghana Youth Meeting organized by the Young Diplomats of Ghana (YDG), in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Bank, Corporate Relations Director of GGBL, Gabriel Opoku-Asare, said Ghana’s leading total beverage business is committed to reinforcing a common sense understanding of moderation when it comes to alcohol consumption.
Sharing GGBL’s sustainability and responsibility agenda, particularly, the company’s Alcohol in Society programme, he noted that the business’ purpose is to celebrate life, every day, everywhere.
He said the beverage company has committed resources to promote responsible drinking in the areas of reducing drink driving, discouraging underage drinking and providing information to consumers to enable them to make informed choices about alcohol.
“Our leadership in alcohol in the society which is integral to our 2020 Sustainability and Responsibility Targets, seeks to create a positive role for alcohol in society through initiatives that reduce and tackle misuse of alcohol,” he said.
He further noted that to provide consumers with the information and tools they need to make informed choices about alcohol consumption, Guinness Ghana engages various stakeholders with tailored tools on alcohol education such as DrinkiQ.
“DRINKiQ is an interactive tool which aims to raise the ‘collective drink IQ’ of those who chose to enjoy alcohol with information and increase their understanding of alcohol issues to enable them to champion responsible drinking. It is part of our wider approach to meeting our 2020 targets to reach one million adults with training materials that will enable them to champion responsible drinking,” he added.
Mr. Opoku-Asare in a call to action took participants through the DRINKiQ platform and urged them to use their influence as advocates to highlight issues around responsible consumption and advertisement of alcohol.
Participants at the two-day event were also given the opportunity to ‘Join the Pact’, as they signed a pledge board and made a commitment to never drink and drive.
