The Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to abolish its policy on core subject grades for admission. The policy demands that students who enter tertiary institutions with grades D and E in their core subjects must be made to re-sit those papers before they would be considered qualified to be awarded their degrees or diplomas. The GUPS said it disregards the policy, explaining that it was inimical to the progress of tertiary education in the country. The immediate past President of GUPS, Mr Jonas Akese, made the appeal at a ceremony in Accra where newly elected executives were sworn into office. With this policy, students who are currently in school with such grades risk not being awarded their degrees or diplomas when they complete their courses, except they resit the required papers. Mr Akese said if the policy must even be maintained, then it must only apply to those who are now entering the tertiary schools and not those who are already in the schools. The GUPS’ immediate past president also called on student leaders to stand for their rights, especially the right of the unheard students which, he said, political leaders were denying them. He called for unity among all organised student bodies to enable them achieve their goals. He advised the new executives not to meddle in politics since it had created enmity amongst leaders of student groups. In her address, Miss Louisa Atta Agyeman, the first lady to be elected President of GUPS, expressed happiness for the confidence reposed in her and pledged on behalf of her executives to offer their best. She noted that even though the task would be challenging, they would perform to the admiration of all. She also promised to work tirelessly and hand in hand with other student bodies to unite the student front since they all shared a common objective.
