Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh Tuesday briefed Parliament on the ongoing outbreaks of cholera and meningitis in the country, saying Ghana has so far recorded 6,145 cases.
“… Mr Speaker, as of February 13, 2025, we have recorded 6,145 cases of cholera, with 719 confirmed cases and unfortunately, 49 deaths,” he stated.
Regarding meningitis, Mr Akandoh noted that as of Sunday, February 16, the country had recorded over 129 cases and unfortunately, 16 deaths, while 29 people were currently on admission.
The Minister emphasised that the government was taking a multisectoral approach to control the outbreaks, including strengthening surveillance, providing timely treatment, raising public awareness, and collaborating with local and international partners.
“Mr Speaker, we have implemented a range of measures to address these challenges…We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates to the House and the public,” he assured.
Mr Akandoh, also a National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Juaboso, appealed to health workers, local authorities, and the media to support the ongoing response to the outbreaks.
In addition, the sector minister reported a single case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the country but assured that the risk of HMPV in Ghana remained low.
The Minister’s briefing provided a comprehensive update on the government’s efforts to contain the outbreaks and safeguard the health of Ghanaians.
