The Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior will today meet top security chiefs to discuss the country's preparedness to respond to terror threats.
Deputy ranking member of the Committee, Major Retired Derrick Oduro said the meeting has been necessitated by the recent attack in neighboring Ivory Coast which has resulted in the death of 16 people.
According to him, the meeting has been called for members to understand the country's security arrangements.
On March 13, gunmen from Al Qaeda’s North African branch killed 16 people when they attacked the Grand Bassam beach resort in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The targeted hotel on the beach is a weekend retreat popular among both local and international tourists.
A local journalist in Ivory Coast, Salay Kouassi told JOYNEWS that security in the capital, Abidjan, has been heightened as tourists continue to flee the country.
This attack is the third in the West African sub-region with Burkina Faso and Mali suffering similar fate resulting in mass casualties.
The news of the attack has caused many Ghanaians to question the country's readiness to fend off such incidents.
Major Oduro believes the nation is not ready for such eventualities saying this explains why the Committee is calling for the meeting.
“The thing [attack] is getting closer and closer”, he said adding that the nation has to be readied for such attacks.
He said government needs to embark on a national education campaign to equip the citizens on what to do and how to behave in case of an attack.
