Child’s Right non-governmental Organisation, Plan Ghana, has released a damning report about the prevalence of sexual abuse in some Ghanaian schools.
In the latest survey about 14 per cent of female students have been abused by their classmates, teachers and relatives.
The study conducted in Awutu Senya, Effutu and Upper Manya Krobo Districts also revealed that about 10 percent of male students have also been abused sexually.
Advocacy and Research Adviser at Plan Ghana, George Yorke, tells Joy News the current situation is worrying.
“It came out clearly that the major perpetrators of child sex abuse are their own classmates (ie 98) and female friends constitute 58 percent, male friends constitute 37 percent, neighbours 36 percent, teachers, 21 percent and other adults in the community constituting 14 percent and relatives, 13 percent,” he said.
The abuses could also be psychological, Mr Yorke indicated and said the situation is serious, requiring that action is taken on it without delay.
He said government must provide resources to institutions mandated to address the problem.
Deputy Education Minister, Dr J.S. Annan told Joy News in an interview whilst the ministry has yet to fill itself in on the details of the report, it will urge the various stakeholders in the country to ensure that the rights of children is always respected.
