The Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini, says as the representative of his constituents in Parliament, he performs his duties without the intention of securing the bid in the next round of the election.
Discussing the high dependency of constituents on their MPs financially on JoyNews’ AM Show Thursday, Mr Suhuyini says he is able to help those he can but without the intention of gaining their favour or ‘buying’ their votes.
He noted that although political leaders who refuse to help their electorates financially are politically affected, he said it is by divine intervention that he is still in office.
“To be honest with you, I do my very best every time without fearing that I will win or lose an election. I think it is by the grace of God that we are where we are.
“If you come to my constituency almost 30, 000 voted for me, but trust me, with the four years that I will serve as MP, I will not have the opportunity to meet the needs of up to about 10,000. Some wish to have direct access to me and seek help,” he told host Benjamin Akakpo.
The outspoken MP further highlighted the high dependency of the poor people in the society on the rich.
In his view, it could be attributed to the failure of the system for equity and equality to prevail in the country.
This, according to him, puts a lot of financial pressure on individuals who avail themselves to “serve” the country by garnering votes.
“If you put yourself out there that you want to help society, and you campaign to be elected to help society, it is logical that when society has needs, whether it is a communal need or a personal need, they will come to you.
