Joseph 'King Kong' Agbeko who Sunday morning lost a bid to recapture his Bantamweight title he lost to Mexican Abner Mares says while he will not protest the final score, the judges' decision was unfair.
Agbeko lost the first bout with the Mexican in August through despicable refereeing by Russell Mora, who blatantly overlooked several clear low blows, ruling one as a knock-down.
Mares had won a majority decision as two judges gave him that fight at 115 to 111, with ringside judge C.J. Ross drawing it at 113 for both men.
The December 3 rematch was highly anticipated and while Joseph Agbeko was the most aggressive on the night, he failed to land most of his punches and also failed to capitalize on a cut he gave the Mexican boxer during the opening rounds of the fight.
After 12 rounds of pounding each other, all three judges scored the fight 118 to 110 for Mares, making the Mexican the unanimous winner of the unfinished business.
Speaking after the score cards were read, Agbeko said although boxing fans had informed him the only way he could win in California was for a knock out, he had convinced himself a win was all that he needed, and whether it came by a decision or knock out, it should be acknowldged.
On the final score, he said: "I think this discussion is unfair," and added, "if you fight in California and you win, you have to win, there is no need to knock your opponent before you can win."
According to him, he fought better on the night because he was using a lot of jabs and his 'killer' right hand was silent because of his strategy.
Agbeko explained, "I have to watch him before I throw the right hand. I threw a few right that caught him but I always have to be careful because if I don't get him well, then he is going to counter me..."
While he does not feel like a loser, he will not protest the results, he still believes he is "a true champion."
