The Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor has reiterated his intention to ban social media on Election Day if need be.

The IGP who was earlier criticized for this same comment seems unwilling to change his mind.

He fears social media if allowed on Election Day, will disrupt the process.

IGP Kudalor in his earlier comment indicated that "At one stage I was even saying that if it becomes critical on the eve and the Election Day we shall block all social media as other countries have done. So we are thinking about it."

In a later interview with Joy News, he said “If people are churning out the type of information which are quite false then why not? The security of this nation is paramount.” 

Despite the criticisms, the IGP believes blocking social media is unavoidable if it will mar the elections.

Joy News’ Kofi Siaw reports that the IGP, in an interaction with the Eastern Regional Police command as part of a visit to the region, says he still stands by his decision to place a ban on social media on election day if need be.

“Social media has been used to spread a lot of half-truths, half-baked information and lies… We shall recommend to our principal that social media is banned…and I still stand by that," Mr Kudalor said..

“Let us be responsible during the elections. Social media should not be used to create any fear, panic and tension,” he stressed.

According to the IGP, even individuals and groups who were opposed to this move previously are now buying into his idea.

“More responsible Ghanaians are moving to side with what I have said…they have seen a lot of reason in what we have said.”

He also indicated that the police will not hesitate to crack the whip on any offending individual or group that goes contrary to laid down rules on Election Day.

Police officers who take a political stance in the discharge of their duties will not be spared either, he added.

“It is my conviction that the police on our part are leaving no stone unturned in our bid to secure the elections,” the IGP said.

“Personnel are therefore warned of taking partisan positions in the discharge of their duties. Those found culpable shall be severely disciplined by the police administration. Professionalism must be our watch word always.”

The IGP urged the regional command to put in proactive measures which will prevent the recurrence of violence during the elections.
