A 35- YEAR-OLD self-styled mechanic who escaped from jail in Tema has been dragged to the Tema Circuit Court 'B' for stealing a mobile phone valued at GHC8O.
The court presided over by Mrs. Anandah Aikins remanded him into police custody.
The accused jail breaker, Richard Wadie alias Nana Kofi, who has no place of abode but has two children, pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared in court. He was said to be on a wanted list of the Tema police until his arrest.
Wadie's uncle is said to be a policeman in the Eastern Region and he had been using the uncle's name to misbehave and sometimes posed as a policeman.
Chief Inspector Bernard Agbedanu, the prosecutor, presenting the case in court, narrated that on December 3, 2010, at about 10pm, the complainant, Abraham Akiley, retired to bed after closing his door but unfortunately, he failed to ensure that the doors were securely locked.
The prosecutor noted that in the early hours of December 4, 2010 at about 2am, the complainant was awakened by a sudden noise and saw Wadie in his room with his Dorado mobile phone valued at GHC80 in his hands. He said Wadie was also busily searching for other things.
The prosecutor added that the accused person, realizing that the complainant was awake and watching him, gave the complainant a hefty slap after confronting him for money.
The prosecutor further added that the accused person, in an attempt to escape, assaulted the complainant who was also trying to stop him from running away.
However, the complainant's incessant shouting attracted a witness to the scene and aided the complainant in arresting the accused person.
The accused person, who was not ready to part with the phone, quickly threw the phone on the ground and pleaded with the complainant and witness not to hand him over to the police. He rather asked them to beat him and allow him to escape. This, according to the prosecutor, was because Wadie knew he was on a police wanted list.
But the accused was later taken to the police station and a complaint was lodged against him. The accused person was arraigned after police investigations. He is to appear before the court on a latter date.
