An educationist has appealed to the National Service Secretariat (NSS), and the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), to post more teachers to the Jirapa-Lambussie District of the Upper West Region to enhance teaching and learning there.
Mr Amatus K. Ningeviele, a Deputy District Director of Education, said the area would require 227 teachers to fill vacancies in 88 primary and 44 Junior High Schools.
He said 445 teachers were requested for last year, but only 218 professionals were posted to the area.
Mr Ningeviele said these when he met with the Regional Minister, Mr. George Hikah Benson at Jirapa.
The Minister, who was on a two-day inspection tour of government projects in the district, also interacted with heads of departments to find out problems facing them.
Mr. Ningeviele said the standard of education in the district has fallen because some schools and kindergartens in the district were without the adequate number of teachers.
He appealed to district assemblies in the region to sponsor the training of teacher trainees so that they would return to their communities to teach after the completion of their training.
Madam Beatrice Kunfah, District Director of Health Services, called on government to build a school for the Somboro community to prevent children from walking long distances and crossing rivers to Makuri and Sabuli to attend school.
