Security analyst Dr. Kwesi Ennin has described as unwarranted, the arrest and interrogation of the Daybreak newspaper editor by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over a publication that claimed the Chief of Defense Staff, Lt. Gen. Augustine Blay will be sacked.
Speaking to Citi FM Thursday, Dr. Ennin said, “I don’t think the invitation by the BNI necessarily dispels the suspicion and the discomfort around some of the recent occurrences and publications within the Ghana Armed Forces.”
On Wednesday, the BNI detained the editor of the Daybreak newspaper, Prince Prah, for alleging in his paper that President Mills was going to replace the current Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen Augustine Blay.
Government, in a statement signed by the Communication Director at the Office of the President, Koku Anyidoho, denied this allegation.
In view of this development, Dr. Ennin said the editor of the paper could have been more cautious in publishing such a security-sensitive issue since it had serious security repercussions. He maintained it could have had a negative impact on the Ghana Armed Forces.
“It is very unfortunate when a newspaper publishes such a sensitive story, particularly taking into consideration the fact that there’ve been other stories about the Ghana Armed Forces that come to contributing to creating a certain sense of unease,” the security expert stated.
He said it is important for journalists to err on the side of caution by cross-checking their facts thoroughly before breaking such news.
He further stated that “even if the story and its content were true what will be the impact of such a story if it’s released prior to its intended date?” he questioned.
Dr. Ennin stated that inasmuch as everyone wants a strong media landscape which will bring to light the actions and inactions of state actors, it is also important for the media to be responsible and double check their facts before releasing such sensitive stories.
