A section of Ghanaians has called on government to ensure that well-deserving brilliant but needy individuals are offered sponsorship to study abroad instead of politically exposed persons benefiting from them.

They argue that when the right people are offered scholarships to study abroad, they in turn return to advance the development of the country.

According to the callers, scholarships are intended for brilliant but needy students, however, they observed that individuals who can afford to pay or are wealthy often benefit from these scholarships, leaving the truly deserving behind.

In an interview with Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, April 15, a caller from Labadi expressed his dismay over the scholarship issue, labelling it scandalous.

He called for accountability, suggesting that someone should resign or face the full rigours of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Look at the Finance Minister recently telling Ghanaians to have patience with government, meanwhile, government is spending as if everything is okay.

"But they are not cutting down on anything, they are rather asking Ghanaians who are suffering to have patience and look at what is going on."

He stressed that scholarships are awarded to the wrong people in the wrong fields hindering the country’s progress.

“We have a problem with democracy in this country, democracy is not good for us, and we need to maybe go with democracy with another governance system because democracy is not food for us.”

He, therefore, pleaded and urged all media houses not to forsake issues affecting citizens when such issues have not been solved by the leaders, especially the scholarship secretariat.

Another caller from Ningo Prampram also emphasised that leaders know what they have to do to advance the course of the country but always fail to act, impacting the country’s growth and development.

“What our leaders are doing to us is very bad, the scholarship is for the brilliant but needy students, if you are well-to-do and you can pay for your fees abroad you should do that, and not misuse the taxpayer's money.

"There are people in this country who are young and very intelligent but their parents do not have the funds to help them through schooling even secondary school. Those are the ones that need help.

Another caller from Kasoa lamented Ghana’s inability to determine which courses should be studied abroad.

“I do not know which aspect of study cannot be found in any of our tertiary institutions in Ghana here, yet those in charge are unable to determine which areas we should spend the taxpayers' money on," he added.
