Some concerned parents have called on the government to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of school children, particularly those in public schools.
The parents who phoned into Joy FM's Super Morning Show, on Wednesday, lamented over how school children are left to wander on the streets after school, without any care whatsoever from school authorities.
“For those of us whose children attend public schools, you’ll see kids walking by the roadside going to school and if there is rain, they have to find shelter by themselves, that’s what I’m very much concerned about. They are so vulnerable,” one of the callers, George who called from Kumasi, said.
Another called to recount how he met two students having sex in the open at the beach. According to him, he was shocked by the scene.
“Formerly GES was responsible for supervising what was happening in both the private and public schools, but it’s not the same anymore,” a caller said.
“If a student doesn’t come to school for a number of days, the school is supposed to call and checkup, in Ghana we don’t like supervision,” another added.
In spite of these concerns, others also expressed the view that it is everyone’s responsibility – parents, students and the government to ensure school children are safe.
“Our children’s safety depends on us, our own responsibility as parents, we shouldn’t pin it on just the government and the school,” one said.
Meanwhile, some parents commended the schools attended by their wards for some initiatives adopted to ensure the children's safety during and after school.
In a related development, an App, Smart Schools App (SmartApp) which notifies both parents and school authorities about the activities of their wards, has been introduced to help in this regard.
Some of the callers, who have already used the facility testified to its effectiveness.
“The moment my children get to school, I get a text that he has gotten to school,” one of them said.
“For my kid’s school, if your parent doesn’t come for you from the classroom, they won’t allow the child to go outside,” another caller, Kofi added.
Hayford also shared that “I am a driver, when I go and drop the children at school, you the driver you have an App that they will let you log on for dropping the children and they will forward the information to my boss.”
