Seventeen years of a station’s history in Ghana is no mean feat considering the fact that it has persistently strived to give its cherished listeners premium contents over those glorious years. Joy 99.7 FM, the Super Hits Radio, is celebrating a milestone of setting a unique pace in the Ghanaian media landscape and the station can’t boast of this feat without the instrumental role of persons referred to as 'founding fathers'. May 1, Workers Day was a homecoming day for the many who effortlessly dedicated their careers and lives to building the Joy FM brand, making it a household name, over its seventeen-year history. During the holiday edition of the nation’s most informative morning show, the Super Morning Show, renowned names who have graced the airwaves such as Komla Dumor, one time host of the Super Morning Show; Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, one time sports anchor; Max Ansah, first Business Development Manager of Joy FM; Mawuli Ocloo; and Fred Chidi, one time News Editor; recounted their memorable moments in the station’s history. Tuesday’s show was fun-packed, mixed with euphoria as hosts for the holiday edition, Bernard Nasara Saibu, Nathaniel Attoh and the beautiful and affable ‘gleam fairy’ Araba Koomson, took listeners through life changing journeys at Joy FM. Speaking from London, Komla, who started as a Mobitel Traffic Watch reporter, hinted that “we started with a lot of challenges,” but maintained that Joy FM’s excellence today was the same when the station started. The Boss Player said he was happy that just as they started - Joy FM is still dominating. He was of the view that “Once you are an employee of Joy FM, you never really stop being an employee of Joy FM.” It was exciting to hear how one – Komla Dumor - can transform from a mere traffic watch reporter to host the biggest breakfast show in the country. He was crowned the country’s best journalist in 2003 and is now with the BBC World Service. Of course, a loyal listener can never forget the infamous “Komla Dumor are you a fool?” comment from a caller into the morning show which kept reverberating over the airwaves. Komla is clearly not the only success story from Joy FM, Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, Fred Chidi, Mawuko Zormelo, Kofi Owusu, Matilda Asante Asiedu, Tommy Annan Forson, Adwoa Aidoo, Cox Tamakloe, Mark Okraku Mantey, Fred Avornyo, Doreen Andoh, Stan Dogbe, Carl Tuffour, Akwasi Sarpong, are just but a few of the pacesetters who have thrilled the station’s discerning listeners to the best in music, entertainment, news and information. Max Ansah noted that it was overwhelming to observe the tremendous transformation and development the station has gone through over the years, disclosing that “I couldn’t find my way around this building. The place has changed … great job done.” “I came very nervous because Joy is Joy, even at that time the reputation had already started. I came very excited but also very nervous that can I live up to the billing?” Yaw Ampofo Ankrah recounted when he got a call to join the best radio family some 15 years ago. The journey, however, has not been rosy. The ‘founding fathers’ noted that, they had to fight several challenges during the station’s genesis to lay a strong, vibrant foundation and also help carved a niche for it. Carl Tuffour, who spoke via phone, disclosed that a comprehensive write-up on Joy FM from its humble beginnings to date will be released by October 2012.
