The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Monday awarded Joy FM for its immense contribution towards the welfare of refugees.
The presentation coincides with the celebration of World Refugee Day today.
Public Relations Officer for the UNHCR Ewurabena Hucthful commended Joy FM for its support and commitment to human rights issues.
“What we have found in our experience working with Joy FM is that Joy FM exercises very extensive human right-based reporting that really looks at addressing the needs of refugees rather than sensationalizing any refugee stories but really looking at refugees under a human right framework and we really appreciate that,” she said.
The Multimedia brand has done extensive reports on how refugees taking up residence at various camps at borders in the country are coping with life where they are.
The World Refugee Day is a day set aside to pay attention to those who through no fault of theirs have had to seek refuge in other countries other than their land of birth.
Ghana is home to several refugees including Liberians, Ivorians and others from Sierra Leon.
Although the government of Ghana provides a safe haven for refugees, some refugees Joy News has been speaking to say they feel removed from their natural habitat.
One refugee from the Krisan camp in the Western region told Joy FM, “being a refugee is something very terrible…It is like losing your hope bets.”
Among other things the refugees are also calling for is access to education.
Meanwhile, the Ghana refugee board says it will soon open a new refugee camp at Agyeikrom near Komenda in the central region.
Coordinator for the board Tetteh Padi told Joy News the board has had to do this because the Ampain refugee camp is full.
