Renowned politician with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kennedy says the gargantuan corruption in the Mills-led administration re-echo the essence of June 4th uprising.
He maintained that ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has institutionalized corruption contrary to the tenets of June 4 on which the party was formed.
Thirty three (33) years ago, a group of junior army officers led by Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings seized power from the Supreme Military Council (SMC II) on June 4, 1979 on the principles of probity, accountability and justice.
The revolution sought to purge the country of corruption and to resuscitate what they said was a deteriorated economy.
However, some political pundits have argued that June 4 has outlived its relevance but others also say the uprising serve as an example for successive governments to abhor corruption to ensure Ghana’s development.
Speaking Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday,Dr. Arthur Kennedy said the June 4 uprising is relevant and timely in today’s politics to remind corrupt government officials of the repercussion of their misdeeds.
He noted that the commemoration of the military junta will awaken Ghanaians to hold government accountable for its actions.
Dr. Kennedy posited that the Mills-led administration has consigned the probity and accountability principles of June 4th to the dustbin after it paid colossal amount of money to its cronies as judgement debts.
He said the embezzlement, ineptitude, nepotism and greed which led to the uprising in 1979 is very rife in the ruling party and wondered whether government officials will pass the probity and accountability test.
Conceding that there were excesses during the June 4, Dr. Kennedy indicated that the coup was to prove that the country did not belong to the minority who had monopolized power and the country's economic resources.
He said former President Rawlings must be commended for being consistent in his [Rawlings] much espoused principles to criticize his own party in government.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy urged Ghanaians to vote out the mediocre Mills-led NDC in the December polls.
A member of the government’s communication team, Kakra Essumuah, who was a discussant on the programme, stressed on the importance to celebrate June 4.
Mr. Essumuah said the military junta will help Ghana to tell its history better.
