Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice Chancellor (VC) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has called on the media to be more proactive in projecting the positive image of the University to the outside world.
He said; "as a science and technology institution of no mean international repute - churning out scientists and other professionals, the University's image needs to be enhanced through positive media publications to increase the marketability of its products".
The VC said this in his maiden encounter with the media and senior members of the University on Thursday at the campus.
Prof Ellis said the media could also change the general perception that the University's mandate was only to admit, train and give certificates to students after their various courses of study.
"The University believes in the capacity of the press to partner it to present positive reportage and sell out the University to the international community as one, which also embarks on developmental projects and programmes to educate its peripheral communities as its contribution to improve their lively hoods", he said.
Making allusions to the IVY schools in the United States and other renowned schools the world over, he said worst things happened on their campuses "but we only hear about the positive ones".
Prof Ellis in recognizing the crucial role of the press in that regard, called on the journalists to take advantage of opportunities in the universities to study and upgrade themselves to increase their capability in their work.
He expressed gratitude to the media for the hitherto cordial relationship that has existed between the press and the institution and called for its further strengthening.
